Varicose and spider veins treatments

Varicose veins are veins of different sizes that have broken valves inside. This causes the veins to dilate and are seen as bulging. It is often associated with tiredness, cramping and even painful legs. If left untreated, it is possible to see skin discoloration of the lower legs and in extreme cases, ulcerations.

Spider veins are dilated skin capillaries (the smallest blood vessel of the body) which are often found to be unattractive and may cause aching legs after prolonged standing.

With the advancement of Phlebology Treatments that are available today, surgery is rarely needed.

The best treatment for these damaged veins remains sclerotherapy.

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is the injection of a sclerosing solution into an unwanted vein. This solution acts as an irritant and destroys the inner wall of the treated vein which becomes scarred and closed. The blood is then re-routed naturally through other healthy veins and, eventually the treated vein will disappear. When larger veins are injected a compression bandage is applied after the treatment and will be worn for a few days. You will be asked to wear compression socks longterm to prevent complications, improve the outcome of the treatment and prevent further varicose veins.

Is sclerotherapy painful?

The sclerotherapy procedure may cause mild discomfort, which is usually minimal. There is always the possibility of causing a mild superficial venitis (inflammation of the vein) which is treated with cold compresses and anti-inflammatory medications.
